Honda has announced plans to enter the FIA
World Touring Car Championship with this, a hot new racer based on the newly redesigned
2012 Civic (well, the European five-door, anyway). Details are slim about the new touring car racer, but the automaker has released a statement confirming that the Civic will be powered by a bespoke 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four, developed by Honda R&D in accordance with FIA's Super 2000 regulations. Honda has also formed a joint partnership with Mugen and J.A.S. Motorsport to develop the new Civic.
So, how soon will we get to watch the new hatchback swap paint with other WTCC racers? Honda hopes to officially join WTCC this season, with some inaugural rounds possibly held in Japan, China and Macau. Following that, a two-car team will be entered into every race in the 2013 championship.
Hit the jump for the full details.

We'll be the first to admit we weren't overly taken with the
Super Bowl commercial
Honda worked up featuring
Matthew Broderick. The company has a long history of genuinely great advertising, and while the countless
Ferris Bueller's Day Off references were clever, the ad didn't really come close to the cleverness found in the movie that inspired it. Fortunately, the company has just released a new spot chock full of... that certain something. The clip follows a spark of innovation from inception to realization as the new European
Honda Civic hatchback. As usual, the commercial is well shot and narrated by none other than
Garrison Keillor, a staple of Honda's British ads.
Look closely and you'll even see a shout-out to Honda's famous "
The Cog" Rube Goldberg spot of a few years ago, as well. You can follow the trials and tribulations of Honda's little spark in the commercial
after the jump.

This crash isn't as odd as the California melee that saw a
Saturn end up
on an apartment roof, but it's still a little out of the ordinary. Apparently a driver in Wellesley, Mass. missed a curb, and wound up driving up and over a
Cadillac CTS that was inside a parking structure.
We're a little baffled as to how this all went down, and the Wellesley police don't give us any clues in their video. Check out what happened
after the jump.

Consumer Reports and the
2012 Honda Civic haven't had the best of relationships. The model failed to earn the publication's coveted "recommended" designation for the first time in the vehicle's history after an extensive redesign, but
CR has found space in its heart for the
2012 Civic SI.
The more sporting version of the venerable compact managed to pickup a recommended rating thanks to additional torque from its revised 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine as well as a quality transmission and good fuel economy. Unfortunately,
CR still docked the vehicle for many of the same problems it had with the base Civic, including vague steering, cheap plastics inside and a noisy cabin.
Those faults helped the
Volkswagen Jetta GLI beat out the Honda Civic SI in a recent head-to-head competition. Evaluators specifically cited the precise steering of the GLI as well as suspension tuning that yields little body lean as benefits, though at 27 miles per gallon, the model averaged 2 mpg less than the Honda. It's worth noting that the Jetta GLI is still to new to have earned a recommended rating.

When we hear words like "gas leak," we're expecting to hear words like "recall" shortly thereafter. That's not the case for 80,000
Honda Civic Hybrid models from the 2006 to 2011 model years that may experience small gas leaks.
The New York Times reports that Honda has instead opted to extend the warranty of those models to satiate customers who may experience the problem.
Honda spokesperson Chris Martin tells the NYT that the potential leak is located where the fuel filler meets the tank, adding that possible leaks are likely small, and they tend to appear nowhere near a likely ignition source. In the event that a leak is detected, Martin says that the fuel tank will be replaced. Owners of the models in question who smell gasoline vapors or who spot a small quantity of gas on the ground need to take the vehicle to a Honda dealership to determine if there is a gas leak. States with really hot weather are reportedly more likely to experience the leak. The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn't yet made any rulings regarding the fuel leak issue, but the NYT reports that the government agency is looking into the matter.
While the lack of a recall campaign may annoy some owners and safety advocates, we're guessing most owners will be thrilled with the extended warranty. Honda will cover the Civic Hybrid models in question with a 10-year/120,000 mile warranty. That's an expensive bit of coverage to give away for free, but keep in mind that a recall would likely be far more costly for the automaker. If Honda is forced to recall the models, every affected part will need to be repaired, and doing so will likely translate into quite a bit more coin than the extra coverage.

It's no secret that the
2012 Honda Civic has been the subject of harsh criticism since its launch earlier this year. It's also no secret that
Honda is rushing to redesign the Civic, and while we
originally reported that the new car would be coming sometime in 2013 or 2014, a memo to the automaker's dealer network states that the reworked Civic will arrive before the end of 2012.
We use the term "redesign" lightly, of course. As much as Honda wants to improve upon its new Civic, the truth is that the updates to the car will almost assuredly be the standard mid-cycle refresh kit. Our best guess is that the interior will benefit from more soft-touch materials and added sound deadening and there could be new paint and wheel design options. According to
The Associated Press, American Honda President Tetsuo Iwamura stated that the automaker will "improve the Civic's drivability," meaning a slight suspension and driveline tuning could be in store, as well.
Still, any improvements will indeed be welcomed. Iwamura told AP that the Civic is still the "leader in compact cars," but lackluster sales and a
failure to earn a Consumer Reports Recommended rating - a first for the Civic - say otherwise.
