If you hear the pejorative "chick car," what comes to mind? Mazda MX-5 Miata? Volvo C70? Would you believe neither made Inside Line's list of 2011 models with the highest percentage of female ownership? No. 1, with 57.9-percent female ownership was the Volvo S40. Considering the female dollar is sought-after, it's probably too bad that Volvo decided to axe the model for 2012.
That means No. 2, the Nissan Rogue with 56.9 percent, could take the top spot for 2012. Or maybe the VW Eos at No. 3 with 56.4 percent. We're also kind of wondering how the new Fiat 500 will fare this year.
No. 4 is another VW that shouldn't surprise. The cute New Beetle has been a perennial favorite among the ladies. It was No. 1 a year ago, but as we know, the newer, more aggressively styled Beetle is enjoying increased interest among the guys. No. 5? The Toyota Matrix, of all things.
Here's how the rest shake out according to Inside Line:
Top ten 2011 models with the highest proportion of female buyers
-
Volvo S40 - 57.9%
-
Nissan Rogue - 56.9%
-
Volkswagen Eos - 56.4%
-
Volkswagen New Beetle - 54.6
-
Toyota Matrix - 54.1%
-
Hyundai Tucson - 54%
-
Honda CR-V - 53.4%
-
Toyota RAV4 - 54%
-
Nissan Juke - 52.7% (tie)
-
Jeep Compass - 52.7% (tie)

Women
A woman who was targeted by Toyota in a creepy, stalker-themed online advertising stunt will be allowed to sue the company, despite the carmaker's argument that she unknowingly agreed to the whole thing.

Toyota may not invest in a next-generation version of the company's
Matrix when the
2013 Corolla arrives. According to
Ward's Auto, the hatchback's sales have fallen off of a cliff, with just 14,592 deliveries last year. That's down from a height of 66,836 units in 2002. But that's just here in the typically hatch-averse United States. In Canada, the Matrix is still kicking in teeth, though the Corolla still outsells its long-roof twin by more than twice the volume.
While there's been some speculation that the upcoming compact Prius variant will supplant the Matrix in the Toyota family tree, Bob Carter, Toyota's Group Vice President and General Manager, says that the two vehicles are expected to appeal to vastly different audiences.
Still, we have to think that Toyota would be wise to invest a little coin in the aging Matrix when the Corolla gets a revamp in a few years. American buyers seem to be slowly warming to the idea of hatches and wagons, and competitors from
Hyundai to
Ford are all offering five-door variants. As
Ward's Auto points out, 43 percent of
2012 Focus sales have been hatchbacks to date.
Despite being big in Canada, Toyota Matrix future unsure originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 15:31:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Did you know they're still making the
Toyota Matrix? The fact Toyota's unveiling a "2011" model must mean they are. Still no more XRS option, but they've got a four-speed automatic transmission for both trim-levels! [

"Limited Service Campaign" may sound like a euphemism for "quiet recall," but the real meaning is related to the small amount of 2010
Corolla and
Matrix models
Toyota is calling in for repair. According to
Reuters, a total of nearly 11,000 vehicles are affected; about 9,400 Corollas and 1,350 Matrix models equipped with the
2ZR-FE 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine and assembled in North America during February and March 2010.
The problem apparently lies in the serpentine belt that drives the air conditioning compressor, alternator and water pump. The belt could potentially deteriorate and come loose or detach entirely, which would result in a loss of cooling. Overheated engines could result, and Toyota is expecting to find half of the belts in need of replacement. Owners have started being notified by mail, and the fix takes about 30 minutes.

2005-2008 Toyota Corolla/Matrix - Click above for high-res image gallery
Toyota has been in the hot seat this year for its high-volume safety recalls, has issued yet another action that covers its 2005-2008 model year
Corolla sedans and
Matrix hatchbacks. Approximately 1.13 million vehicles are affected by a problem which could cause the 1ZZ-FE 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine to stall. Three accidents have been reported thus far, though Toyota hasn't confirmed that these incidents were indeed caused by this engine stalling issue.
To fix this problem, Toyota will replace the engine control modules on the recalled vehicles starting in mid-September. Owners will be notified by mail in the coming weeks and the service will be provided at no charge.
This is not the first time this year that the Corolla and Matrix have been the subject of safety issues. In early 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated almost 750,000 2009 and 2010 model year vehicles for
a potential steering issue, and Toyota provided a free fix for customers. An official recall was not issued, though, as Toyota maintains that this problem is not a safety concern.

*UPDATE: We mustn't forget that the Pontiac Vibe is built on the same architecture as the Corolla/Matrix, and General Motors has just issued a press release (available after the jump) stating that certain 2005-2008 model year Vibes are being recalled for this same issue.
