The
FJ Cruiser in the picture above was turned into a
Transformers-like casualty after an acetylene tank inside the cabin blew up. The Canadian you see hugging the FJ is its owner, who happened to be in the SUV when that acetylene tank exploded.
According to his account of the event, the cap on the sealed tank became loose before he parked the truck in his garage overnight. The following morning, the ripe smell of acetylene filled the FJ, so he opened its doors to air it out. Wanting to speed the job along, he pulled the truck out of the garage - yes, that involved starting it. Then, while still inside the FJ, he hit the switch to roll down the passenger-side power window, and, as the old Batman series would have said, "KA-BOOM!"
Obviously, he lived. Not just that, he suffered nothing more than a loss of hearing in his right ear and a scratch. Which is not a bad way to say, "Christmas came early." Have a look at the aftermath in the mage gallery, and in case you needed a reminder, don't try this at home.

With the
Hummer long gone and the
Land Rover Defender not even offered on this side of the Atlantic, the
Toyota FJ Cruiser is one of those few vehicles (together with the
Jeep Wrangler) that looks the part of a real off-roader. But if you actually want to take it off road, the Trail Teams edition is the one you want.
Available only in red with matching roof (unfortunately), the 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams edition follows
previous versions and packs a new set of Bilstein shocks, BF Goodrich off-road tires mounted on TRD wheels, a locking rear differential and skid plates to guard the engine, fuel tank and transfer case.
A whole mess of optional extras - from keyless entry and cruise control to power outlets and back-up camera, are also fitted as standard. The standard 260-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 is also fitted with an extra air filter, and of course there are the requisite special badges to set this model apart. Check it out in the trio of high-res images for a closer look.

Xplore Adventure Series FJ Cruiser - Click above for high-res image gallery
Our National Parks are American treasures, and one company wants you to get out there and explore them. We saw its first creation,
the Xplore Adventure Series FJ Cruiser, at last year's
SEMA Show in Las Vegas. That vehicle is going to be auctioned off and the proceeds donated to the National Parks Foundation. Xplore isn't limiting itself to just the
FJ Cruiser, however, and parts will soon be available for various
Jeep,
Ram Truck,
Toyota,
Ford,
GM,
Nissan,
Honda,
Subaru,
Hyundai and
Kia vehicles.
The parts are available at local dealerships and range from the basic to the burly. Stage one of the Xplore series of parts includes interior upgrades produced with the help of Katzkin. Stage two upgrades feature
BFGoodrich off-road tires, aluminum wheels, Bilstein shocks and a Magnaflow stainless-steel cat-back exhaust. If you want to push further into the woods, Stage three bolts on winches, a roof rack, rock rails, a rooftop tent and upgraded lighting. There's also a built-to-order Stage 4 for Jeep and Toyota vehicles, which brings builder TLC into the mix and adds custom paint choices as well as electronic upgrades and expedition-level equipment.
Keeping with the theme of the Xplore name, each Xplore vehicle comes with a one-year National Parks pass, membership in the Xplore club and a subscription to the Xplore Lifestyle magazine.

In an effort to raise awareness about our National Parks, the folks at Xplore Vehicles have teamed up with a host of sponsors to create a
SEMA-worthy
Toyota FJ Cruiser that's ready for the wilderness. The Xplore FJ employs a TRD supercharger, OME suspension, 17-inch BFG mud terrain tires, a Magnaflow cat-back exhaust, WARN winch and a whole slew of other exterior upgrades. Inside, the FJ is appointed with a Katzkin leather-suede interior with Xplore floor mats and a special dash plaque.
After it's debut at SEMA, the Xplore FJ will be auctioned off early next year with the proceeds being donated to the National Park Foundation. Learn more about this unique off-roader at
Xplore's website, and see it from all angles in our high-res gallery below.

Toyota issued a press release recently to discuss the updates to the
2011 FJ Cruiser. The release goes on to highlight the all-new Trail Teams Special Edition FJ, which wears Army Green paint. The photo above was attached to the release and highlights something else: someone at Toyota might be color blind.
Tritanopia, a form of Blue-Yellow colorblindness, can cause some green colors to appear light blue to the affected viewer. We would love to show those of you with standard color vision a photo of the Army Green FJ but we don't have one available.
For our readers with Tritanopia, check out the sweet new Trail Teams Special Edition FJ shown above.
Everyone, regardless of colors seen, can hop the jump to read about the updates on the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser. They include an upgraded standard audio system, improved rearward visibility and a new design for the available 17-inch wheels.
