Mini is hard at work on the newest interpretation of the
Cooper S John Cooper Works GP we recently
spotted testing. Speaking just ahead of the
New York Auto Show, Kay Segler, the senior vice president of the Mini brand, said the vehicle will debut in around five weeks time at the Circuit Paul Ricard F1 track in Le Castellet, France during a Mini community event.
That's exciting, but not nearly as much as news that the new machine is plenty quick. As you may recall, our spy photographers spotted the Cooper S JCW GP just outside of the infamous
Nürburgring. Segler says he's personally driven the machine, and that he knows for a fact that the vehicle is a full 20 seconds faster around the road course than its predecessor. Segler declined to announce the exact time.
Twenty seconds is a huge amount of time in any form of motorsports, and that's doubly true for 'Ring times. The original Cooper S JCW GP boasted just 215 horsepower but shed an impressive amount of weight to stay quick. The new model is expected to bring around 220 hp to the party along with significant weight reductions of its own. Still, a 5-hp nudge hardly explains a 20-second improvement around the Nürburgring. Stay tuned.

Back in 1967,
Mini shocked the world by winning the
Monte Carlo Rally. The man behind the wheel was one
Rauno Aaltonen, and now Mini is honoring the Finnish driving legend with a special edition bearing his name.
Available (in parts of Europe, anyway) on the classic three-door hatchback with either the Cooper or Cooper S engine spec, the Rauno Aaltonen edition comes painted red, while white features prominently on the roof, stripes up the hood, down the back and across the quarter-panels, side mirrors, hood intake and 17-inch wheels. Inside, Aaltonen's signature graces the speedo and the leather-wrapped steering wheel is unique as well.
The best part is that buyers of the Cooper S Rauno Aaltonen get a day of instruction at the ice-driving school run by the honoree's son Tino Aaltonen. Check out the special edition in the high-res image gallery.

Mini and the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have announced an investigation into certain
Cooper S models after reports of engine fires on at least 12 vehicles, five of which resulted in a total loss. Interestingly enough, Bloomberg reports that in eight of those cases, the fires occurred while the vehicles were parked and turned off.
At this point, the investigation covers around 36,000 2007 and 2008 model year Mini Cooper S models. A spokesperson with
NHTSA said that the complaints indicate a growing trend and that most of the reports have occurred within the last year.
Neither Mini nor the automaker's parent company,
BMW, have commented on the investigation at this time.

Even if you never wanted to design an urban racecourse and share it with a network of like-minded urban-racecourse designers, you can still play
Mini Maps, Mini's new Google Maps-fed Facebook game. Just putter around Sheboygan, Wisconsin in a chocolate-brown Mini S with a Swiss flag on its roof. That's what I did.

Mini Inspired by Goodwood - Click either image for high-res gallery
While it may seem anathema to American tastes, in the Old World, bigger is not always better. Particularly if you live in a city laid out long before the advent of the automobile. But overseas buyers can still have extravagant tastes, so downsizing to a smaller vehicle to get around densely-packed cities shouldn't necessarily equate to losing out on those little touches that make a high-end automobile what it is. Hence cars like the
Ferrari edition Abarth 695, the
Maserati edition Alfa MiTo, the
Aston Martin Cygnet, and this: the
Mini Inspired by Goodwood.
A joint effort between the two subsidiaries of
BMW in England, the
Mini Insipired by Goodwood (named for the home of
Rolls-Royce) is set to be unveiled shortly at the
Shanghai Motor Show. Mechanically, it's essentially a
Mini Cooper S, packing the same 1.6-liter turbocharged four with 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque (192 hp on overboost).

The exterior is distinguished by Diamond Black Metallic - a color straight from the Rolls-Royce catalog (or alternatively, Mini's own Reef Blue Metallic) - with 17-inch multi-spoke alloys and the requisite special badging. But like a Disney character seeking access to a secret, lion-shaped desert cave, it's what's inside that counts: Rolls-Royce craftsmen have collaborated with the Mini Yours custom orders department to trim the Cooper's cabin out in Cornsilk leather, Walnut Burr wood trim, black Nappa leather upper dashboard, thick-pile carpeting... the works, in other words - everything you'd expect from a Rolls-Royce cabin, only smaller.
There's a lot to love here, but try not to love it too much: only 1,000 examples will be made, and as with all BMW-related option packages, we're sure it won't be cheap. Even though deliveries start about a year from now, we see this car going down a storm, so you'd better get your order in quick. Otherwise, the closest you're likely to get is the extensive high-resolution image gallery we've compiled along with the details in the press release after the jump.
