We're glad to see that
Mercury vehicles are continuing to make themselves useful even after the brand's demise. One enterprising soul in Palm Bay, Florida took it upon himself to craft
another 2002 Mercury Cougar into the image of a
Bugatti Veyron. The project took Mike Duff around nine months to complete, including all of the exterior body work and slathering the interior with leather. Outside, the body is stitched from plenty of fiberglass and composites on a steel tube frame, and the finished product looks pretty similar to a legitimate Veryon.
Unfortunately, the vehicle's drivetrain won't be setting any world records anytime soon; the car still uses the same beating heart as the 2002 Cougar. The 2.5-liter V6 is good for 170 ponies - a far cry from the nearly 1,000 horsepower available from the legendary W16 in the Veyron.
There are a few plusses, however. For one, Duff's creation can seat four people comfortably, and we're guessing it costs significantly less to own and operate. Speaking of price tags, this faux-Bugatti can be yours for the princely sum of $89,000. Check it out on
eBay Motors.

Replica builders are an odd breed — as dedicated to their craft as those guys who once built ships in bottles. A Florida man
built this "Bugatti Veyron" from a Mercury Cougar, and
it can be yours for $89,000.

Farrah Fawcett, a Mercury Cougar and a real, live Cougar - Click above to watch the videos after the break
An automobile manufacturer doesn't survive for 70 years without producing its fair share of television commercials. In fact,
Ford's Mercury division has been around since well before the television was a common item to see in American living rooms. As such, there is a plethora of past and present advertisements available on YouTube from which we decided to assemble a video homage to the soon-to-be-departed interplanetary marque.
Some of our personal favorites include those that recite the long-lost "Ride with the cat!" tagline that we presume was tied to the brand's popular Cougar model before being adopted across the line. Then there's the classic Farrah Fawcett spot or two where she has multiple perfect hairstyles and the car has "glove-soft vinyl."
Speaking of the late actress, did we mention that we think we now know how the term Cougar came to depict an attractive older woman looking for guys? They are all over Mercury Cougar commercials from the 1970s and '80s.
In conclusion, we had to put
Jill Wagner on our list (and so we did, twice), and we couldn't possibly overlook the 1971 Marquis that apparently rode better than both a contemporary $16,000 limo and an exotic European luxury sedan. Blind
taste ride test for the win! See a slew of dated Mercury commercials
after the break.
