Official: Veilside bets on Black with Mercedes SL body kit

Veilside Mercedes-Benz SL Black Fortune

There are hundreds of aftermarket tuners out there, but few hold the type of street cred that does Veilside. Long known for making Japan's greatest sportscars even greater, Veilside has now turned its attention to the Mercedes-Benz SL.

Not the newest one, mind you, because it's not out yet. Instead, Veilside has taken to the Tokyo Auto Salon to unveil a conversion kit that turns the outgoing SL into something closer to the top-of-the-line SL65 AMG Black Series.

To do so, Veilside fitted the SL with a custom body kit that includes new bumpers front and rear, new hood, fenders, side skirts, and spoiler, all crafted from carbon fiber. The result is called the Black Fortune.

The folding roof mechanism present on the stock SL - but removed on the Black Series model - appears to remain in place, so the Veilside won't encompass the kind of weight savings embodied by the factory special, but with only 300 examples of the kit to be offered at about $30,000 a pop, seeing one on the street should be about as rare a proposition.

Spy Shots: Mercedes SL prototype says you’ll never catch me, copper

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class spy shot

It's not every day that Mercedes-Benz comes out with a new SL. The roadster that anchors the top of the company's non-AMG production range tends to enjoy an unusually long lifecycle. The iconic first-generation Gullwing was on the market for ten years. The second-gen model lasted just eight years, but the third iteration was around for a whopping eighteen. The boxy fourth version was around for fourteen years, and the current model that replaced it has been on the market since 2003, with a facelift that came in 2008.

Fortunately, a new model is on its way and should put the MkV out to pasture after ten long years of service. Due sometime next year as a 2013 model, these are the clearest shots we've seen yet of what to expect.

Now stripped of all but a bare minimum of disguising, the 2013 SL looks a bit more svelte than the model it replaces, though that doesn't tell us if it'll be any lighter: the current two-seat folding hardtop convertible weights as much as some SUVs. The more upright front grille is both a nod to the SLS AMG and likely a measure to comply with pedestrian-impact regulations enacted in Europe.

It looks as though LEDs are lurking in the lower front intakes on either side, with what seems like it could house a side intake behind the front wheels. The test mule is draped in a new shade of copper we haven't seen before, and we suspect that those unflattering wheels are temporary. Take a gander yourself in our high-res gallery.

Report: Mercedes-Benz discontinues V12 roadsters ahead of new SL debut

2009 Mercedes-Benz SL

It's been a while since we've heard anything about the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. That could be because the current model dates back to 2003, undergoing the facelift we know today back in 2008. But now we've got news, and it's a mixed bag of good and bad.

The bad news first: word is, Mercedes is discontinuing the twelve-cylinder versions of the SL. The SL600 was the first to be phased out, and now it appears the SL65 AMG is getting the axe as well. There's no word yet on whether or not that includes the hardcore, fixed-roof SL65 AMG Black Series.

The good news, however, is that phasing out of the V12 roadsters could signal the imminent arrival of the next-gen SL. That's expected to show up sometime next year as a 2013 model, and will come as good news for SL buyers as the current model has lived longer than anything in the Mercedes-Benz range this side of the Geländewagen.

With all the hype surrounding the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, it's easy to forget that the SL and SLK roadsters are still a crucial part of the automaker's lineup. We've seen the next generation of the baby SLK out testing, and now our spies have caught a larger 2012 SL mule out and about.

Up front, the more upright fascia with the dinner plate-sized Three-Pointed Star logo is the biggest change, as are the revised headlamps, which seem to be less angular than the ones found on the current SL. Looking below, we can see that LED running light strips have been fitted at the lower air intakes (something that's quickly becoming standard equipment across the automaker's portfolio), and out back, the triangular taillamps have been smoothed out a bit.

Our crafty spy photographers have also managed to get a glimpse inside the new SL. A new sport steering wheel is in place, and even though we don't have the photographic proof, we're told that the rest of the interior (center console, etc.) is akin to the new design found in the SLS AMG. Fine by us.

TC-Concepts gives the Mercedes SL65 the Black Series treatment… and keeps the folding roof

TC-Concepts Mercedes-Benz TC 65 "Black Series" - Click above for high-res image gallery

It doesn't get much further up the Mercedes-Benz pecking order than the SL65 AMG Black Series. Before the SLS came along, at least, it served as a rolling example of what the power-hungry speed freaks at AMG were capable of achieving. And in the process, they replaced the SL's folding hard top with a fixed roof in an effort to trim some extra pounds off the roadster's considerable heft. Thing is, not everybody is necessarily ready to sacrifice the flexibility of the collapsible roof in an effort to gain that performance edge.

Enter TC-Concepts, a German tuning garage that has given the...um, "stock" SL65 AMG the Black Series treatment, and kept the origami roof in place. The TC 65 is fitted with a custom body kit, complete with new grille, bumpers and more, plus 20-inch rims and custom interior to give it the Black Series look. But they didn't stop there. By tuning the twin-turbo V12 from 612 horsepower "stock" (there we go again) to 700 even, TC-Concepts has actually surpassed the factory Black by some 30 horses. That may just be enough to compensate for the extra weight of the folding roof, but with the wind wafting through your hair, we doubt you'd even notice.
