It's a somewhat little known fact that Lyndon B. Johnson loved cars, but the rather unique fleet of cars he kept on the ranch in Stonewall, TX where the 36th president grew up and lived for most of his life certainly tell the tale. More »

Kim Jong-il’s last ride was in a 1976 Lincoln hearse [Video]

For a dictator whose country has never been on particularly rosy terms with the United States, North Korea’s recently departed Dear Leader was allotted a rather peculiar hearse after a life of Mercedes-Benz fetish. That's totally an old black Lincoln. More »

Bonhams to auction Lincoln fit for a pope… or an astronaut

1964 Lincoln Continental parade car

Not a lot of people have use for a parade car. The pope would, as would a group of astronauts returning from a mission in space to be showered with ticker tape. And if you think you deserve a parade of your own, this could be your vehicle of choice.

The venerable auction house Bonhams has got a very rare 1964 Lincoln Continental landaulet up for grabs at its upcoming event at the Quail Lodge during Pebble Beach weekend. Based on the Continental introduced in 1961, this enormous 21-foot-long beast of a car actually borrows its underpinnings from the Thunderbird - only it can carry a couple more passengers.

This example was prepared by Lehmann-Peterson coachbuilders out of Chicago in order to transport Pope Paul VI upon his 1965 visit to New York City to address the United Nations General Assembly and give mass at Yankee Stadium. It packs exterior step plates and handrails for ride-along security, a raised showcase seat in the back, a PA system, and a removable roof section, clear canopy and rooftop windscreen to shield the dignitary while basking in the adulation of the assembled masses.

Ford shipped the car off at a moment's notice to Bogota, Colombia, for another papal visit a few years later, where the high altitude required the car be fed by jet fuel provided by the Colombian Air Force. But in case that wasn't enough, the car was retasked to fête returning astronauts during the peak of the NASA space program. The heroes of Apollo 8, 11, 13 and 15 all rode in this limousine, and now it's expected to fetch between $250,000 and $350,000 when it hits the auction block on August 18-19 at the Quail.

Every Halloween the streets fill with tiny Supermen, Batmen, Green Lanterns (not many Aquamen). There are some superheroes you must avoid. Can they fight bad guys? They can't even drive to where the bad guys are. More »

Lincoln Continental to return? Depends on who you ask…

1961 Lincoln Continental in blue

There's some word that Ford is seriously considering resurrecting the Continental name. The internets are buzzing with both confirmation and denial of the rumor depending on where you look. Over at Automotive News, a report suggests that dealers have been told that the Conti will resurface as part of an upcoming Lincoln renaissance that includes the introduction of up to seven new or significantly reworked models in short order. Those dealers have supposedly been shown a handful of concept-level renderings of what the new models will look like.

Meanwhile, Motor Authority is reporting that Ford is trying to silence any speculation that the big Continental will return to the Lincoln stable. The site quotes Lincoln spokesman Christian Bokich as saying that of the seven new models headed to the showroom soon, none of them are a new take on the Continental.

That would seem to make sense for a number of reasons. With Lincoln fully embracing a terribly confusing alphabetic naming system, a nameplate like Continental would stick out in a big way (though perhaps Ford is reconsidering this nomenclature strategy). Throw in the fact that the MKS is currently tucked into the slot that the Continental traditionally held, and there's less and less room for resurrecting the nameplate.

So what does Lincoln have planned for the near future? The crew over at Pickuptrucks.com seems to think that the brand is going to take another swing at a luxury pickup, even though the Blackwood and Mark LT models before it have failed to move the sales needle. Of course, all of this is just well-intentioned speculation at this point. Chances are that with today's dealer meeting proceedings underway, Lincoln won't be able to keep its real plans under its hat for long.
