Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Land Rover is busily working on creating lighter versions of the its offerings in an attempt to head looming fuel economy regulations off at the pass. That includes the Range Rover Sport. Details are skimpy as to exactly what kind of weight savings we can expect from the next-generation vehicle when it debuts, but it's clear that Land Rover is already hard at work on a few prototypes. Our spy photographers managed to catch a mule out and about on public streets wearing sparse camouflage and plenty of sheetmetal from the current SUV.

Next year will see the Range Rover Sport equipped with a new eight-speed automatic transmission manufactured by the gearbox gurus at ZF paired to a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine in the UK. The transmission isn't expected to be mated with the company's gasoline V8 offerings, however. Stay tuned for more information on the next-generation Range Rover Sport as it becomes available.

A new model year brings about new features to all Land Rover vehicles, and 2012 is no different. Most notably, both the Range Rover Sport and LR4 will now be offered with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, paired with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine. The V8 mills, however, still employ the services of a six-speed cogswapper.

That eight-gear transmission may be big news for the diesel-gulping British SUVs, but here in the United States - where we won't likely get a diesel-powered Land Rover - we're quite excited for the interior upgrades, including a brand new seven-inch touchscreen with Dual View. This setup allows the driver to view information such as navigational cues, while passengers can enjoy TV or a movie. Thanks to the wireless WhiteFire headphones, the driver also won't have to endure the same terrible Backyardigans song over and over (and over and over). Though if one happened to enjoy the work of Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha and Austin, then the 17-speaker Harmon Kardon stereo will deliver their tones to your ears.

This is all just the tip of the iceberg regarding the new features of a vehicle that probably has a Terrain Response setting for scaling icebergs. Both the 2012 Range Rover Sport and 2012 LR4 have hefty press releases for you to read after the jump.

There's a grand tradition to enormously powerful and torquey diesel sport-utes. Most of them come from the Volkswagen group - like the Touareg V10 or the Audi Q7 V12 TDI - but this, as you might have guessed, is no VW. It's a Range Rover, uut one that's been thoroughly worked over.

The modifications have been carried out through the joint efforts of Project Kahn and Cosworth - two British tuners that have been working together for the past couple of years. Their latest product started life as the thoroughly capable and luxurious Range Rover Sport with the 4.4-liter V8 diesel. With 313 horsepower, the diesel Rover is hardly a slouch, but Cosworth has taken it a step further (and then some) by squeezing out a whopping 500 horsepower.

To go with the massive upgrade in output, Kahn has given the Range Rover an extensive cosmetic update both inside and out, with new bumpers from and rear, side skirts, 22-inch wheels and an interior decked out in billet aluminum and perforated & quilted leather trim. Check it out in the high-res image gallery below.
