Consumer Reports has just wrapped up an evaluation of subcompact sedans, and the
Kia Rio EX has rolled out ahead of the class. The four-door beat out its corporate clone, the
Hyundai Accent and the
Chevrolet Sonic to take the top spot. Evaluators pointed to the sharp handling and well-optioned interior in the Rio as reasons for the vehicle's win. The newly redesigned
Nissan Versa and unloved
Toyota Yaris filled out the top five sedans. And what of the baby hatchbacks?
CR once again credited the
Honda Fit as leader of the pack, followed closely by the Versa Hatchback and Rio Hatchback.
The organization found fault with the base Chevrolet Sonic's fuel economy, and found the turbocharged LTZ model to be too expensive. Evaluators also felt the Sonic Turbo "didn't live up to its sporty aspirations."
We'll politely agree to disagree on that one.
All of the vehicles in the evaluation are either too new or scored too low in
CR evaluations to earn a coveted Recommended rating.

Here at The Garage, we haven’t been shy about our enthusiasm for Kia’s meteoric rise from humble als0-ran to a well-respected automaker. With the all-new Rio, Kia’s smallest offering is finally blessed with the smart, Euro-inspired lines its other siblings enjoy. Already available as a five-door hatch, Kia recently announced pricing for the Rio four door sedan, starting at $13,400USD. All Rio’s share a 1.6L direct injected four cylinder rated at 138hp. The Rio will be the first non-hybrid, non-luxury car sold here to offer Idle Stop and Go, which shuts the engine off while at a stop for improved fuel economy and emissions. The base Rio LX is available with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while EX and SX models can only be had with the automatic.
All Kia Rio sedans come standard with air conditioning, power steering, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, USB port and SiriusXM satellite radio. The expectation of premium features in small cars is no new concept in Asia and Europe, and is finally gaining traction here in North America. The top-spec Rio SX rings in at $17,500, with high-end features such as metal pedals, LED front accent lights, LED taillights, Kia’s UVO voice activated infotainment system and rear-view camera. These features were once the domain of only the highest-end luxury cars, but that they can be had as standard equipment in a car costing under $18,000 is nothing short of amazing, but a testament to how serious Kia is about standing out in a crowded market.

Of all the things that you could call a
Kia, "racy" isn't the one that jumps first to mind. But the budget-oriented Korean automaker has been
competing in Grand-Am, and is stepping things up (or down) a notch with the racer you see here.
Built for the B-Spec showroom stock class, this
Rio five-door has been fitted with the requisite safety features (like a stripped-out cabin and roll cage) but little else. Kinetic Motorsports did the preparation work with an eye on numerous different racing series, but we'll have to wait another couple of weeks until
SEMA when the car's set to be unveiled for all the details. In the meantime you can click the above image to view in high resolution and
follow the jump for the brief announcement.

I'll never forget my first time in a Kia Rio. It was Los Angeles, 1937. I'd just started my job as a fluffer for Transworld Airlines. Howard Hughes pulled up. Oh wait, that wasn't a Kia Rio at all.

Because Switzerland is the home of all things small and precise, Kia will unveil its
redone Rio there next month, aiming to take on the Fiestas and Yaris-es of the world in the new class of small cars you can buy even if you're not a 16-year-old girl or a 36-year-old failure.
