Rumormill: Jaguar X-Type successor speculated anew

We expect the Jaguar X-Type to be making an appearance in an episode of AMC's Walking Dead, since the sedan that died two years ago simply will not, well, die. Or rather, its successor won't die. Autocar has a detailed report on the work being done to engineer a new entry-level Jaguar, and it is hypothesized that we'll see it in 2015.

Summer of 2010 was full of news about an X-Type heir to combat the 3 Series that would be wrapped around a modular aluminum platform. That, however, appears to run contrary to Autocar's assessment that "The car's closest conceptual rivals in the showroom are expected to be the upcoming Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLC small saloons." What's more, the mag asserts it will be motivated by not just 1.8- and 2.0-liter four cylinders, but also a 1.5-liter three-cylinder.

That latter engine would probably be a go-to in markets like India and China where Jaguar wants to make an even bigger mark, and not slated for U.S. sale. But combined with the revelation that the new sedan will be front-wheel drive, it's clear that even in the U.S. we can forget about any 3 Series comparos and instead look at this as a frugal baby Jag for young social climbers and CAFE mongers.

Oh, and it won't be cheap: £22,000 was given as an estimate. As a base price, that puts it about halfway between the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Whatever's coming, it should be interesting.

More details on Jaguar’s 3 Series fighter

Jaguar X-Type

Word is bumping around the internets that Jaguar may be interested in dusting off a sub-XF model. Doing so would put the big cat into direct competition with the mighty BMW 3 Series - a feat Jaguar attempted once before with the ill-fated X-Type. But according to Adrian Hallmark, the automaker's new global brand director, the company won't be repeating past mistakes.

Instead, buyers can look forward to being able to choose between a sporty coupe and a volume sedan if the project gets green-lit. Offering two models would allow Jaguar to deliver a high-quality vehicle while simultaneously reducing its own costs.

Additionally, there's word that Jaguar wants to ensure that the new car packs all of the luxury and craftmanship of its bigger brothers at a more affordable price point.

Unfortunately, it may be a good long while before we see the fruits of Hallmark's labors come to the surface. Jaguar says that it is just now beginning to look into a new, smaller model and that it could be four years or more before the vehicle actually shows up on dealer lots. If that's what it takes to keep Jaguar from churning out another X-Type, we're all for the wait.

Rumormill: Jaguar working on aluminum X-Type successor

Tata Motors chief executive Carl-Peter Forster has acknowledged that Jaguar needs a smaller, higher-volume vehicle and it appears that just such a car is already under development. Unlike the less-than-stellar X-Type which was based on the second-generation Ford Mondeo, the new car should actually be a real Jaguar.

Jaguar is reportedly working on a new modular aluminum platform that would be shared between the new smaller car, the mid-sized XF and the next-generation XK. In renderings posted by AutoExpress at least, the baby Jag bears a strong resemblance to the XF but with curvier rear haunches and XJ-style taillamps. Of course, what the real thing will ultimately look like is anyone's guess.

Power will likely come from downsized and boosted four-cylinder gas and diesel engines, with the current 3.0-liter diesel V6 as a range-topper. Also look for a hybrid to enter the mix. All of this will help Jaguar meet the new EU CO2 emissions limits once the new smaller Jaguar debuts, which could happen as soon as soon as 2012.

Report: Jaguar X-Type replacement aims to fight the 3 Series

With the all the news coming out of Jaguar, it's obvious its Indian parents are intent on making the leaping cat a credible competitor to the world's luxury automakers. To wit: not only has Jag green-lit the XE - a next-generation XK-based competitor to the Porsche Boxster - it ready to take the fight to the BMW 3 Series in the form of a reborn X-Type.

While the previous Mondeo-based X-Type fared poorly during its run, Tata Motor's chief executive, Carl-Peter Forster, told Automobilwoche that in order for the British brand to compete on a global scale, a smaller sedan is a requirement. To that end, a new sedan is under development to slot in below the XF, likely utilizing a new aluminum architecture based on its next-generation sedan.

In addition to X-Type replacement and the new, smaller coupe - rumored to arrive in 2012 - Forster says that work is underway on a long-wheelbase version of the XF for the Chinese market and a wagon version of Jag's mid-size sedan is slated for sale in Europe (XFR estate, anyone?).

On the Land Rover front, the recently revealed Evoque is the first of three new products to debut in the next five years, including an all-new Freelander with seating for seven and a revised Defender which is set to arrive in 2015.
