General Motors is aiming to improve fuel economy performance on both the
Chevrolet Equinox and the
GMC Terrain by integrating the company's
eAssist hybrid system, according to GM Inside News. The report cites multiple unnamed sources indicating that the hybrid crossovers will debut for the 2014 model year, and that they will utilize the same eAssist system found on sedans like the
Buick Regal,
Buick Lacrosse and
Chevrolet Malibu. The system pairs a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 15 kilowatt electric motor and a 115-volt lithium-ion battery pack.
So far,
GM has priced its eAssist models identically to the company's V6 offerings. If that trend continues, buyers will have their choice of fuel-efficient crossovers without having to endure a price penalty. As you may recall, the
Buick Lacrosse eAssist yields an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, which we're guessing wouldn't be too far off of what a front-wheel drive Equinox or Terrain eAssist would be capable of returning.

Automotive News is reporting that the
Canadian Auto Workers union is concerned that
General Motors may shift production of the
Chevrolet Equinox and
GMC Terrain from its current location near Toronto to the automaker's Spring Hill, Tennessee facility. GM recently agreed to open the southern plant as part of its agreement with the
United Auto Workers, and CAW President Ken Lewenza says that the company won't tell him whether or not Equinox and Terrain production will continue to hang around his neck of the woods.
GM, meanwhile, says that it won't comment on future production plans.
There is a chance that full-scale production of the two crossovers would remain in Canada while overflow production could land on the shoulders of the Spring Hill facility. That would retain jobs in both locations, and help GM alleviate its tight supply of the vehicles.
Automotive News reports that currently, dealers are operating with a 33-day supply of Equinox models and a 42-day supply of Terrain vehicles. Those figures give the crossovers the distinction of having the thinnest supply of any of the automaker's high-volume vehicles.

Chevrolet MyLink - Click above for high-res image gallery
General Motors is finally bringing the smartphone battle to
Ford with the introduction of
Chevrolet MyLink, an integrated infotainment system that connects to your smartphone and allows you to access apps through either the steering wheel controls or the console-mounted touchscreen.
The wraps officially came off at tonight's
Engadget Show and boasts similar functionality to
Ford's AppLink and
Toyota's recently revealed
Entune system. MyLink connects your Android or Blackberry device over Bluetooth, allowing you to wirelessly access apps. And if you're partial to Apple's iOS devices - namely the iPhone or iPod Touch - you get the same functionality, but can only be controlled by plugging it in via USB.
At launch, MyLink is only compatible with
Stitcher and
Pandora radio, with other apps due to be released later this year. The
Chevrolet Volt and
Equinox will be the first two models to come equipped with the new system, and in addition to voice-control functionality courtesy of
Nuance, both models will be available with
PowerMat's inductive charging system, so you don't have to worry about your Bluetooth-tethered phone running out of juice. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but expect MyLink to be available within the next few months.
Hit the jump for the official release and get more details at our tech-obesessed sibling site
Translogic.

KBB.com names its 20 Most-Researched vehicles for 2010 - Click above for high-res image gallery
Kelly Blue Book has compiled a list of the most researched new vehicles for 2010, as well as brands that hold the greatest market share of interest. The Honda Accord, Civic and Toyota Camry claim the top three spots -- not a surprise if you've been reading this list the last few years. Since 2004, the same three vehicles have garnered the most attention at KBB.com.
While it's not a surprise to see those three, it's a nice change of pace for a few newcomers to the list. The Hyundai Sonata was 29th overall last year, but has risen 24 spots to claim the title of fifth most-researched vehicle for 2010. Not everyone rose this year, of course. Two notable vehicles, the Toyota Prius and Corolla, dropped a few spots compared to 2009.
It's not all bad news for Toyota, however, because KBB.com also takes a look at each brand's market share of interest among new car buyers. Toyota leads the way at 13.4 percent, with Honda, Ford, Chevrolet and Nissan rounding out the top five in that order.
Here's how the Top 20 Most-Researched Vehicles for 2010 breaks down:

Toyota may be the brand we all associate with unintended acceleration these days, but complaints of runaway vehicles have been lodged against nearly every automaker under the sun. A Kentucky woman recently received a firsthand lesson in that fact when her 2008
Chevrolet Equinox allegedly accelerated to 90 mph for over 20 minutes. State Troopers were eventually able to help bring the SUV to a stop without incident.
According to Louisville television station WLKY, Marlene Taylor was driving with her twin daughters on I-64 when she set the cruise control for the drive home. Instead of sticking close to the speed limit, the vehicle continued to speed up until it reached 90 mph. Taylor called #911 through the vehicle's OnStar system and was told to attempt to shift the vehicle into neutral, set the emergency brake and attempt to physically lift the accelerator pedal with her foot. According to the account, none of that worked.
Troopers eventually brought the vehicle to a stop by pulling in front of Taylor and slowing down. Attorney William McNurry now represents Taylor and says that he and his client simply want
General Motors to responsibly investigate the scenario. At this time, Taylor has not filed a lawsuit. You can check out the full story and #911 call on WLKY by

Thanks for the tip, Steven!

IIHS rollover tests for midsized SUVs - Click above for high-res image gallery
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has completed a
round of rollover testing on 12 mid-sized SUVs (though most are technically CUVs, but whatevs), and the results show that some carmakers are exceeding federal rollover standards. Six of the haulers scored a Good rating, led by the 2010
Jeep Liberty, one scored Acceptable, and the remaining five were Marginal. The Good rating means a tested car has a roof that is twice as strong as the current government safety standard.
Five of the top six - the
Chevrolet Equinox,
2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee,
Toyota Highlander and
Venza, and
Kia Sorento - also scored Good marks for front-, side- and rear-occupant protection, and so earn the coveted classification of being an IIHS Top Safety Pick. If your CUV isn't listed, fear not, as the IIHS is testing them in groups.
Follow the jump for the full release, and you can have a look at the entire batch of tested vehicles in the high-res gallery below.
