2011 Chevrolet Cruze - blue - front three-quarter view

2010 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon two-door - front three quarter viewAutomotive News reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun two separate investigations following reports of engine fires in both 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and 2010 Jeep Wrangler models. The government agency received two complaints about fires in Cruze sedans and eight in Wrangler models, with some reporting their vehicles were completely destroyed. In both Cruze cases, the compact sedans were being driven when the fires occurred. One Cruze Eco owner reported seeing smoke emanating from the engine bay, and the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames five minutes after coming to a stop.

In seven of the Wrangler cases, the engine was running when the fires started. One owner reported seeing burning liquid pouring onto the ground that couldn't be extinguished with water. In 2010, Chrysler recalled certain Wrangler models to address automatic transmission fluid that could overheat and expel onto hot surfaces, causing fires.

Both General Motors and Chrysler are cooperating with their respective NHTSA investigations and say they are unaware of any injuries or fatalities stemming from the fires.

Geneva: 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Wagon blends style with utility

2012 Chevrolet Cruze Wagon

In the fine tradition of the Celebrity Wagon, the Bow Tie brand brings you this: The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Wagon.

We kid, but in all honesty, the Cruze Wagon isn't just a more utilitarian take on one of our favorite C-segmenters - it's an attractive one to boot.

And speaking of boots, the Cruze wagon uses its extra inches to good effect, expanding the cargo capacity of the standard sedan and hatchback models to 17.6 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and blowing out to 52.9 inches with the rear thrones folded flat.

Chevrolet MyLink comes along for the ride, and in Europe, buyers get a choice of three gasoline engines and two diesels. But here in the U.S. we get nothing. Chevy has no plans to bring the Cruze Wagon to the States.

Report: Chevrolet pulls out of British Touring Car Championship

Chevrolet Cruze BTCC

If you, like us, were wondering how MG managed to snag Jason Plato away from Chevrolet in the British Touring Car Championship, well you had good reason to wonder. The racecar driver and Fifth Gear co-host had, after all, driven the factory-backed team to both titles in 2010 and landed himself third and his team second just this past season. But you can wonder no more, as the latest news from the BTCC paddock is that Chevrolet has withdrawn from the popular saloon racing series.

The news arrives as a bit of a surprise coming from the front-running team, particularly at a time when the grid has expanded enormously in the past couple of seasons. The reason? According to Autosport, Chevrolet wants to focus its energies on the World Touring Car Championship, where the same outfit RML that ran the BTCC team fields similar Cruze touring cars - driven by Yvan Muller, Rob Huff and Alain Menu - with considerable success: The RML Chevrolet team has claimed both the drivers' and constructors' titles for the past two seasons running, making it something like the Red Bull Racing of touring cars.

A longtime competitor in the BTCC, RML reportedly hopes it won't be long before it is back on the grid in the British series, and given that most of the cars in the championship are fielded by privateer teams, we wouldn't be surprised to see them return as early as next year. In the meantime, General Motors will be well represented in the series by Vauxhall.

Report: Chevy stretched Sonic sedan because it looked funny

2012 Chevrolet Sonic sedan rear three-quarter view

If you think the Chevrolet Sonic sedan looks a bit abbreviated now, you should have seen it before General Motors stretched the vehicle. Take a good look at the spec sheets for the Sonic hatch and Sonic sedan, and you'll likely notice the four-door is over a foot longer than its twin. According to Automotive News, GM felt that early design attempts at the sedan bodystyle were too stubby looking. While the four-door was always intended to be somewhat longer than the hatch, designers rolled in additional space in the vehicle's rump to help situate the vehicle's proportions.

All told, the Sonic sedan is a whopping 14.1 inches longer than the Sonic hatchback, and nearly all of that length is in the trunk area. That gives the Sonic Sedan 14 cubic-feet of cargo area, just 1.4 cubes less than the significantly larger Chevrolet Cruze.

Report: GM to build Cruze and other Chevy models in Europe?

Automotive News reports General Motors may begin manufacturing the Chevrolet Cruze in Europe. The vehicle would likely be produced at an Opel plant in Poland, while a handful of other Chevrolet models may see their production move elsewhere in Europe. The move is said to be the first step toward moving GM European operations toward profitability. The automaker would pull some production out of South Korea, which would then free up the company to proceed with cost-cutting measures at Opel. Automotive News reports Opel has lost approximately $13 billion since 1999.

Under the plan, Cruze production would find a home in Gliwice, Poland. Meanwhile, GM would spread the vehicles currently built at the facility across other Opel plants in the EU. Additionally, GM is considering moving the Orlando crossover to the Opel facility in Bochum, Germany. That plant currently builds the Zafira minivan, and has been rumored to face a closing in the future.

Last year, GM exported around 250,000 vehicles to Europe from South Korea.

Spy Shots: Chevrolet Cruze facelift spotted overseas

Chevrolet Cruze FaceliftA Czech site has gotten a glimpse of what we may be able to expect from the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze face lift. AutoForum managed to swipe what it says is a full, undisguised view of the vehicle's revised front fascia, where we can clearly see a more angular split grille with new horizontal slats. The current Cruze relies on a rounded opening. It isn't completely clear that this is a planned global facelift, or if it's just a market-specific look, but if it's the international mid-cycle refresh, the vehicle will also benefit from more expressive triangular fog light housings and stylized detailing along the lower fascia. We like what we see.

General Motors has already made it clear American buyers can look forward to getting their hands on both a diesel Chevrolet Cruze as well as a five-door version of the vehicle. Whether this fascia update will tag along on either of those models remains to be seen, however. The snapshot clearly shows a European license plate bezel, and the vehicle has been on sale in the old country for significantly longer than it has here in the States. Head over to AutoForum to see the full-scale shot side-by-side with our current model.
